Mandi @ Vintage Revivals really sparked a fire within me that prompted me to reveal my first girl crush. Well here it is: Brenda @ Cozy Little House has my heart. I wouldn't know Brenda if I fell on her. She lives in Oklahoma and I live in Michigan although, every morning the first place I go is Cozy Little House. If the day makes me sad and I need to share the rest of the day with a friend I go to Cozy Little House. I can't put my finger on how she does it but I can say without even knowing me she lifts me up like any real friend would do and motivates me to be more than I can be without being the Army Reserves. So there I said it, my first and only girl crush is Brenda @ Cozy Little House.

So, on Saturday August sixth my favorite guy turned eight years old!!! I just can’t get over how it seems like only yesterday that he was born. He was so tiny! He was six weeks early and was only three pounds five ounces. He was the tiniest baby I ever held.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3p_FgxLFeR0KppqOBRZ_u3Yw-ReGzyZN-0pWeFX6AhaCqwo4MUviPL-re14gv-Eave8lTLYlDdQMFgHp2XVWqo8wiLUgB69U60aO1ZR-NMU5dPH275fs3gnj4nVTWcwc7sQeFqqyDVfk/s520/IMG_NEW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367237494164103730" />

I also can’t believe how being a mom changes a person!! I mean let’s be honest had someone said to me, “what would you do if someone vomited or defecated on you?” I would have been totally disgusted!!! You know what though; you totally change when you become a mom and you just wipe it off and go on about your day.

My Interests have also changed. I would have never believed I would have any interest at all in trains but after taking the boy to any train place we can find I actually have to say they are a beautiful means of transportation. I mean, look at this beauty:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9Kbi-7mrl-mJ2zbEsuJ7slBl2y-z6JVVtnp3NVbK8xk7DbNs-tT-3rcj470xhYxVaI8faU75I5XFpOl8iuQr0nOo9RThmWy_lR3qfHW4lrVPLwA8uFuySxU8t7xP0A8HxMypAvbN-UZ8/s520/050.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641824160946735842" />

Aside from all of that though, you have a really cool squid to share your life with and revel in the young man he will be someday. So, I just wanted to share with all of you what happens when time flies:

Happy Birthday to my Little Man,
Love Forever Mom!!

P.S. Remember, it's o.k. when time flies as long as you doesn't pass you by!!!

It's always scary with what you are going to get. Will it make a huge explosion or gently open up? Will it wait until I bang it on the counter or explode as I rip the paper off? Of course when someone as cool as Lynne at Happier Than a Pig in Mud has another super fun cook off I am more than happy to play the game!! She always has such fun cook off!!
This recipe is super super easy!!! It’s like making apple pie in ten minutes!! Here the stuff you need:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMeSDY5vRlzxZHftbt3NVdynRUa7_nJ05UIW-NnzYP9WQFNMkex0u7eBn5qYefIE2YC9JDnqgFD3HsJFupQ8ey8MHSRDUdzeKh-TRWho4lpEYVJAhLJ2SKD9PBXn6WzAoskypd186jTsw/s320/430.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5619328415981339618" />

Apple Dumplings
2 Cans of Pillsbury crescent rolls
1 1/3 cup of sugar or Splenda
1 12 ounce can of regular or diet Mountain Dew
1 stick of butter
2 apples
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
Core and peel each apple and cut each one into 8 slices. Unroll the crescent dough and wrap one apple slice in one crescent roll. Place these in a 9x13 baking dish. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a saucepan. Once it is melted stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Spoon the mixture over each one of the apples then pour the Mountain Dew over the apples. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.
This may or may not surprise you to know that I got this recipe from Paula Dean. I have actually had it before but never had the actual recipe. I found this on Paula’s website. I cut the recipe in half when I make it and only use one can of the biscuits. If you can get past how gross and soggy you think the crescent rolls may get I urge you to try this recipe!! They aren’t gooey one bit and taste like little apple pies.
Enoy!!!!thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-31025216444993057562011-05-26T19:34:00.007-04:002011-05-26T20:23:06.943-04:00A little bit of fairy dust
So we all have those things of modern day life that we need to incorporate into our rooms that "just don't go." My case in poiont:

I mean really??!! What do you do with stuff like this? Be disciplined and put it away every time I use it in a day??? Put it in another container after I buy it so it can live on the counter? Really???!!!??? Those are beautiful thoughts but in my world I just know it won't happen. Plus I wanted something that would be close to little or no money.

SSooooooooo, I traveled to a land far far away that is home to a wonderful and generous fairy, the Graphics Fairy to be precise. I used her handy dandy little search tool and here's what I did:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWW2oYtGoDVCwjgY91PDM5LKTlUT4wBe0wK-gO2-CGY7Kdu4i8ImlriCMEC9LjcxIe67LsuclG9iygVQ7F9abp5UQ9DwlAz2nGQWOWfWp7k_oRVZBoFEvoGw4R1PfZrvaH3-ll2UD76xg/s320/188.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611183392051077458" />

I found these cutesy little labels, printed them out, and glued them on with some handy dandy tacky glue!!! See, everything is better with a little bit of fairy dust!!! OOOHHHHHH and lookey there the Graphics Fairy even stopped by to give her approval!!

thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-41237220007100039032011-05-04T21:53:00.042-04:002011-05-15T18:10:13.057-04:00How to take the butter out of a Paula Deen RecipeSo I think we're all familiar with Paula Deen and her love for butter!!! Lynne over at Happier Than a Pig In Mud is having a Paula Deen cookalong on May 15th. I decided to Make Paula's Gumbo recipe which calls for of course butter and oil!! When I read that I decided to remove some of that. "How," you say? WWWeeeelllllll---I decided that instead of all the butter and oil that I would replace it with--bacon grease. That's right, bacon grease!!! I have to say that I am not a petite girl nor a health food nut but sometimes Paula's use of butter even makes me cringe a little bit!! That of course was not the case with the Gumbo recipe. When my sister, the White Farmhouse, and I were kids we thought bacon grease was a seasoning. Our mom, a self respectin' bacon grease usin' southener, would put it in just about anything, including green beans. Yes, green beans!!! I just felt that bacon grease would be a lot better in the gumbo than butter. Here is Paula Deen's Gumbo Recipe . . .

Gumbo
Servings: 8-10 servings
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 2 hours 25 min
Difficulty: Moderate
Ingredients Add to grocery list
4 green onions, sliced, white and green parts
Chopped fresh parsley
2 cup frozen sliced okra
1 14 ounce can stewed tomatoes with juice
1/2 lb small shrimp peeled, deveined and cooked
5 beef bouillon cubes
1/4 bunch flat leaf parsley, stems and leaves
3 stalks celery chopped
8 cloves garlic minced
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 large onion, chopped
5 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 lb smoked sausage, cut into 1/4 inch slices
Salt and pepper
3 large boneless chicken breast halves
4 cup hot water

Directions

Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken until browned on both sides and remove. Add the sausage and cook until browned, then remove. Sprinkle the flour over the oil, add 2 tablespoons of butter and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until brown, about 10 minutes. Let the roux cool.

Return the Dutch oven to low heat and melt the remaining 3 tablespoons butter. Add the onion, garlic, green pepper and celery and cook for 10 minutes. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, to taste and the 1/4 bunch parsley. Cook, while stirring frequently, for 10 minutes. Add 4 cups hot water and bouillon cubes, whisking constantly. Add the chicken and sausage. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes. Add tomatoes and okra. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Just before serving add the green onions, shrimp and chopped parsley.

Here is my version using the same ingredients but substituting bacon grease for the butter. The bulk of the variation I put on it is how I prepare the dish. Let me show you with some pics . . .

So you start with the bacon grease. Make note of the color, it will quickly change.
Once it is hot you throw in the chicken breasts and a whole bunch of seasoning. No, no, no---not more bacon grease!!! Actual seasonings!!! A whole bunch of garlic, onion powder, and celery salt. That's because I, like the White Farmhouse, forgot to buy celery.

Notice how the color of the bacon grease is already changing to a dark amber. Don't get too hysterical because before we are done it will get even darker!!!

See what I mean!!!!!

Next we saute the sausage . . .

See how dark the bacon grease is now?!? Once the sausage is cooked add the chicken back in. At this point you will want to add in some oil, I used olive oil. We are then gonna just sit back and let it do it's thing for about ten minutes.
It will start out looking like this:

and end up looking like this, with all the yummy black stuff on the bottom of the pan:

Add in the shrimp and the other veggies and saute them altogether. Put in everything except for the tomatoes and the okra. I also use another variation. I use beef stock instead of the bouillon cubes. What you want to do is add about a cup of beef stock with the heat still turned up high. This will get all of those yummy tidbits off the bottom of the pan. Simmer that for about another 45 minutes . . .

Here is my last little tip for the Gumbo or any other soup/stew type dish that tends to get a little greasy. Instead of trying to scoop the excess grease off the top all you have to do is let it cool to room temp and then put it in the fridge. When you take it out in the morning all of the excess fat will have solidified on the top and you can easily remove it with a spoon . . .

Oila!!!

This really makes a lip smackin . . . . .What's that noise??!! . . . "Hello Bohemuth." He is a large boy and he comes to you compliments of my two little hands and the most creative woman with wood I have never met, Ana White from Knock off Wood.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 128px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhigtRW4yOZ2hx0TdDAdV_vciYV9THFoaSavINcWS2GrDApWztXC9wFZb5OICi6X4CuQDEkwGOXDhRMZqjL9FQjtS_lxdbLGtJzxF3yq8jojrAELeBmCAntSiEKXzS0X5AHPm8Y7PzxWP0/s320/welcome-ana.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597742994432329922" />
As you can see don't only hate her because she's clever with wood, hate her because she's beautiful too!! (Only kidding!!) You can find her by clicking here. When I first moved into the apartment I didn't have much furniture nor money. I needed a massive entertainment center to house all of my "collectables." I stumbled upon Ana's web-site and found the plans, thus the birth of Bohemuth.
As you can see Bohemuth has suffered through his first year with a terrible birth defect, he was never fully formed. Once again, after a visit from the White Farmhouse he is currently under going some cosmetic surgery. I did want to show all of you his new color---he was born white and morphed to this beautiful turquoise blue. The White Farmhouse and I have other plans in the works for him. I will give you a little taste and show you his new color, the rest you will have to wait for!!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHOUeraYz6T1fe7P4zqSNG0U_JuYl1hyphenhyphenOK8bkB5_za500OJaIxOQiUAwbqVy4iv8vrj-8z1hdSTKu-AUs9OMe9RbxWdoTs3dtGrIsEXTBzculd2pZCrCqiqUaHXI1LkXF5kwy-vKXvCTg/s640/014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597739232223728178" />

Oh Thank Heaven for Sherwin Williams!!!!! Bad design, bad design, watcha' gonna do when she comes to you? SSSOOOOOO-------I realize that I haven't posted in a supery ubbery dubbery long time so I thought why not do it after a life changing event--or actually design changing event I should say. After my first year of renting my aprtment and slowly trying to make it feel like home I realized I needed some help. So, when the White Farmhouse came for a visit I decided to take advantage of it. I had a spot by the front door that was a landing spot, evidently a landing spot for pigs because it was quite the little stye!! I wish I had taken a before picture but in a blur of design the White Farmhouse (a/k/a/ my OLDER sister) got to work. Here is a pic of how she transformed my spot:

I just love my new space!!! She also gave me more room to collect all the dishes I see on Stone Gable!! Thanks a lot Yvonne!! And thanks a lot to my OLDER sister, Maggie at the White Farmhouse!!

What are you gonna do if she comes to you??thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-2023494565326720842010-09-13T06:43:00.001-04:002010-09-13T06:46:45.221-04:00Least we forget......thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-61316825818215506552010-02-04T20:21:00.004-05:002010-02-04T21:09:30.664-05:00Another week almost over!!!Whhheeewwww!!!!!!!! Who is it that I go to in the early morning and start my day with? Well, that would be Maggie at the White Farmhouse and Kim at the Daisy Cottage!! So I just wanted to take a moment and let them know. Why don't all of us take a moment and let our bloggy friends know just how much we appreciate their inspiration!! I am!! If you like you can add a comment and share them with the rest of us here.thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-33970847320219686422010-01-19T19:48:00.005-05:002010-02-04T21:05:40.494-05:00Goodbye !!!!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSTDKc9sQW3DBnMKTvRvg7vzRdoJGTJpB72KMKYfOP3SBcH5lLNSw5K9nuxN9sWlBPCTWXLM6Rj7MF6oK6ALu0yROfZVyODxuqwzQd84uNqN02RtBfyttqo1TCIV8rndImg6qScGs34Fw/s640/015.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428618058855266386" />
Yes, I too am lazy!! A man who encouraged those around them to love their fellow man and vehemently persuaded them to be a better person. With that it mind it inspired me to remember another great man, Edward F. Connell my grandfather.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLDQJ7MIoj6zEwKqgc25mDINL4850exFCics23f8k95HYSsh3hBnbIdbNK-lj4f7P9H1RrEYA8WNsJ2pmTSyDphs8mus7OvUu_pF9ARMXUHbYvI7oQq14hjhywAuhy46EdF0zP3BVIXmI/s640/Grandpa+Connell.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428136765135888530" />
He also inspired those around him to be a better person. In fact the day that he passed away he died on the steps as he was on his way to class at 63 years old. He had always dabbled in photography and writing and was attending classes for a journalism degree. Maybe that is where I got the photography bug from.
When I was 11 years old I had just gotten my first camera for Christmas . I had to take it to grandma and grandpa's to show it to him for Christmas. As he sat in his rocking chair I begged him to let me take his picture. He sat and posed and then said "O.K. but you're gonna break your camera!" No sooner had I taken the picture when smoke came out of the ice-cube shaped flashbulb!! I was devastated--grandpa laughed!! The picture above is one of the last pictures that I took of him. He passed away that May, 13 days after his birthday.
With that in mind he still inspires me today and I still can't get rid of that bug!!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: " src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJMadDskGcLfvAvJHWhOhGwEeHbXKfiN-CBq6iugFHZBEy4FfuLDopEznK8ArzzgAKl3Boc5U4FBxhdCeVLj_BRImefoLMqrsKhbcIGbOzvQ81U0eurffVS9C17mJYOiQDXYTr4BCE_wc/s640/Syrina222.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428141900544520466" />
In fact this picture is the first picture I took with my new Canon dSLR. Most people do this though by giving up things; giving up smoking, giving up eating, giving up clutter, and so on and so forth. I decided this year that I was going to choose to not give up something but to take an active stand to become a better person!! The three things I have decided to do are; learn guitar, post to my blog on a somewhat regular basis, and participate in the 365 project!!
I can't wait!!! My kindred spirit Kim at the Daisy Cottage inspired me with her photography so much that I went out and bought myself a new dSLR camera. I think the 365 project is the perfect way to get used to using it!!!
And of course my ever inspirational Lucy at the White Farm House has inspired me to keep the blog up!! she is so motivational!!
So let's take this journey together and see what 2010 will bring!!!thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-90273561086697876882009-08-15T23:00:00.002-04:002009-08-15T23:08:06.538-04:00Things that make you go hhhhhmmmmmm...........so as I was at work tonight my friend Ashley asked me to give her a humorous life lesson. After thinking for a few minutes I decided to share a life lesson with her that came from my son Michial. He often tends to have tremendous wisdom even for his young age.
My hunorous life lesson went something like this:
Michial: "Mom do you ever get an itch on your butt?"
Me: "Weeeellllllll, sometimes."
Michial: "Well when you scratch it--make sure you go inside your underpants and not on the outside."
Me: "OOOOOOO.KKKKKKKK."
Michial: "Yeah, because if you itch it on the outside---you'll make a hole on your underpants like this." (At which point he turns and shows me the hole in his underpants.)

Sometimes my boy just cracks me up no matter how gross (if you thinks about it) it may sound!!!

On that note though I just wondered what is YOUR humorous life lesson? If you like you can post a comment and share it with the rest of us.thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-76716582334523454612009-08-09T21:20:00.003-04:002009-08-09T21:42:40.307-04:00K---here it is.....<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 163px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZWpuNX9WUKzuAtk1o9otsCc-txLw4Pdu2ry0lIUg43FrWqqoyk4g10i3YuLF6NvuQ22TuXUP_IrTeHXfv5cqhp7TcL1wRwhTZzqSs7c180Mmx1wfJbF24YAJyuckQTSdVhdpKQbgOE_w/s320/0503090607551i_believe_t.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368139644386228402" />
It just figures that it would be a train picture!! They can even inspire us to be a better person. That is what happened to me August 6, 2003 when I met the smallest yet most inspiring person I have ever met.......
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 210px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3p_FgxLFeR0KppqOBRZ_u3Yw-ReGzyZN-0pWeFX6AhaCqwo4MUviPL-re14gv-Eave8lTLYlDdQMFgHp2XVWqo8wiLUgB69U60aO1ZR-NMU5dPH275fs3gnj4nVTWcwc7sQeFqqyDVfk/s320/IMG_NEW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367237494164103730" />

.....my 3# 5oz son Michial. I stop and wonder some times where the time has gone for I have tried to savor each moment of his young life!! I still can't believe he is 6 years old!! His name is Craig and he and his beautiful wife, Maisen have an awesome web-site that I think everyone should visit. Here is a link to their web-site: http://www.spirited-lady-boutique.com/. They are two of the nicest people and they are willing to share the information they know about reupholstering. The chair I redid never had arms that were comfortable, you could always feel the wood underneath. I watched a video on YouTube by Craig on how to pad the arms. They have never been more comfortable!! I really owe it to Craig for sharing his knowledge. They also have an upholstery blog that is free to join!! Again, I think everyone should check it out!!!thepurplerosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03914207035029715006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4627466379310252260.post-41208361376222478092009-07-13T23:10:00.012-04:002009-07-15T00:22:46.546-04:00
SSSSSooooooooo..........................................................

........believe it or not I have thought long and hard about starting a blog!!

But par usual this crazy bigger...older.....MUCH....older sister put the idea in my head and hence, here I am!!!

Of Course, it isn't the first time she put an idea in my head. Take this picture for instance....

...we were chatting on line one night and surfing the web
when Lucy (Maggie) sends me this link to look at the
pictures of the bedroom ideas. Of course, I fall in love with the room!! After much thinkin'----again!!! I decide this is the room for me and Lucy and I set out on a path to replicate it!!!

And trust me when I say this is not the first time
Lucy and I have set out on some hairbrained idea!!!
So after hours of thinkin', searchin', and talkin'-----here are some pics of the room (not quite done but well on it's way.)

Here is one of my braniac projects that I actually sucked Lucy into---

the double wedding ring quilt. I made this one almost 10 years ago

and have never used it. As you can see I loved purple even then! The

curtains are left from when I did the room originally, two years ago, and I

decided to keep them but lose the valances!!

And of course the biggest work horse of all that has been with me for

almost ten years too!! (I had it before I made the quilt!!)

The CHAIR!!!!!! As I said I have had this chair for almost ten years

and I call it the work horse because it is now on it's third redo to

match the decor!!! When I got it, for free, it was ivory pleather. Then

it went to a green brocade, then it went purple velvet, and now it is

almost purple/ivory toille!!!

Well I believe that will wrap up my first post. I just wanted to share the pics of my room as it is on it's way to getting done---Hopefully, before I change my mind again!!!
